Emphasis is on helpful, non-judgmental groupwork. Liz is a published short story writer and student of literature. Waiting list applies

We will be lunching at restaurants mostly in the City of Yarra. Our selection criteria are food quality, good value, variety of cuisine and comfort.  You will be sent a list of venues giving  all relevant details.  We will be booking the restaurant on the assumption you are coming.  Please let the leaders know if you WILL NOT be able to attend. Suggestions frim participants are always welcome.

Each session, we will visit one or two of Melbourne’s numerous art galleries, craft displays or specialist museums.  Afternoon tea will follow for those wanting it.  We will rely on gallery or museum staff for information about the exhibits. Participants will each arrange a session. 
N.B. we have lightweight stools for hire, courtesy of City of Yarra.

Despite the tragic loss of our former tutor Helen Heritage, the Writing group will continue in 2012 as planned,with the focus on Memoir Writing. The group will be self-directed and will negotiate the course outline in the first session, perhaps using Carmel Bird's book 'Writing the story of your life' to provide structure. Meetings will take place fortnightly in order to workshop drafts written outside the sessions. Class limit 10.

Kathleen Fitzpatrick was an Associate Professor of History at Melbourne University from 1938 to 1960. Elizabeth will present a PowerPoint display and lecture about Kathleen's life. She will give an insight into how she researched and wrote her thesis about Kathleen.

Practical activities to supplement your foreign language classes: over 3 two-hour sessions, exploring strategies and activities you can use to help you master a new foreign language. These sessions will be useful for anyone studying a new language,either independently or attending a course. The focus will be in listening and speaking at beginner to intermediate levels. We will look at effective language learning strategies and some underlying learning principles. The main objective is to get you practising the language of your choice.

Be inspired by John Berger's Ways Of Seeing ("The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.") to look at familiar places with new awareness. We will draw or paint in public parks in the City of Yarra that have significant landscapes and good coffee nearby. No expensive art materials required. Materials list and some notes will be supplied. Limit of 8 participants.

In the Australian Literature course for 2012 we will be looking at books about Australians encountering the outside world, either by going abroad or by meeting foreigners on Australian soil. Such encounters are often a result of Australia being involved in wars, so we will also be looking at the effects of war on the men and women who take part, and its effects on the people who remain at home.
The class works like a book club. Members are expected to read the book in advance of the class Background notes and questions for discussion will be sent to members ahead of each class. We meet from 10.30 to 12.00 on the second Wednesday of each month at the Holden Street Neighbourhood House. A book list will be supplied to each class member on enrolment.

Our aim is to surprise and stimulate you with an eclectic collection of classic American literature. The course operates like a bookclub with one book discussed per month. We supply notes and questions before class to broaden and deepen your reading.

We usually have so much fun that the class continues after midday in a nearby coffee shop. This year we are having eight meetings beginning in March with a month off in July. Books are available in libraries or can be bought new or secondhand.
